Questions regarding Online Blood Testing or Ordering a Laboratory Test

Additional Test

Numerous tests are readily available. Many tests are tailored to a specific disorder or group of related disorders (which are typically grouped together in this book). For a wide range of disorders, other tests are frequently used.

Screening for a disorder

diagnosing it, determining its severity so that treatment can be planned, and monitoring a patient's response to treatment are all examples of the purposes for which tests are carried out. Anemia, or a lack of red blood cells, may be detected by blood testing. After treatment, the same test may be repeated to see if the number of red blood cells has returned to normal.

Occasionally, a disorder can be treated simultaneously with a screening or diagnostic test. For instance, polyps can be removed prior to the completion of a colonoscopy, which is an examination of the interior of the large intestine using a flexible viewing tube. There are many different kinds of medical tests, but the lines that separate them frequently blur. Endoscopy of the stomach, for instance, enables the examiner to see inside the stomach and collect tissue samples for laboratory examination. Most tests fall into one of the six categories listed below.

Analysis of Body Fluids

The LAB TEST Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) icon Blood Urine Fluid within a joint (synovial fluid) Fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord (cerebrospinal fluid) Less frequently, sweat, saliva, and fluid from the digestive tract (such as gastric juices) are analyzed. When fluid collects in the abdomen, resulting in ascites, or in the space between the two-layered membrane covering the lungs and lining the chest wall (pleura), resulting in pleural effusion, the analyzed fluids may only be present if a disorder is present.

Imaging These tests give a picture of the inside of the body, either all of it or just some of it (see Overview of Imaging Tests). The most common imaging test is a simple x-ray. Ultrasonography, radioisotope (nuclear) scanning, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), and angiography are some of the additional techniques.

Endoscopy

A viewing tube known as an endoscope is used to directly examine the organs or spaces (cavities) inside the body. Most of the time, an endoscope that is flexible is used, but sometimes a rigid one is better. The examiner watches the images on a television monitor rather than directly through the endoscope because the tip of the endoscope typically has a light and a camera. The endoscope has a channel through which tools are frequently passed. Tissue samples are cut and removed with a single kind of tool.
Endoscopy typically involves inserting the viewing tube into an existing body opening, such as:

Nose:
To examine the lungs or voice box (laryngoscopy): Mouth: Anus: Esophagoscopy, gastroscopy, and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy are procedures used to examine the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine. Coloscopy: Urethra to examine the large intestine, rectum, and anus Cystoscopy: Vaginal examination of the bladder Hysteroscopy, which is used to look inside the uterus, sometimes requires cutting a hole in the body. To allow the endoscope to enter a body cavity, a small cut (incision) is made through the skin and the layers of tissue beneath it. These cuts are used to look inside of the following things:

Measurement of Body Functions

Typically, body functions are measured by recording and analyzing the activity of various organs. Joints (arthroscopy), abdominal cavity (laparoscopy), mediastinoscopy, lung and pleura (thoracoscopy), and area of the chest between the lungs (mediastinoscopy). Electrocardiography (ECG) is one method for measuring electrical activity in the heart, and electroencephalography (EEG) is another method for measuring electrical activity in the brain. Pulmonary function tests are used to measure the lungs' capacity to hold air, move air in and out, and exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide.

A microscope is typically used to examine tissue samples taken during a biopsy. The examination frequently focuses on finding abnormal cells that may indicate inflammation or a condition like cancer. Skin, the breast, the lungs, the liver, the kidneys, and bone are all common tissues that are examined.

Genetic testing, or analysis

genetic material, typically uses cells taken from the skin, blood, or bone marrow. Chromosomal, gene (including DNA) or both abnormalities are examined in cells. The following methods can be used for genetic testing:

Fetuses:

Children and young adults: To determine whether they have a genetic disorder: Adults: To ascertain whether or not they have a disorder or are at risk of developing one Risks and Results Every test carries some risk, and some people use them to help figure out how likely it is that their relatives, like children or grandchildren, will get certain disorders. The risk could be an injury that occurs during the test, or it could be the requirement for additional testing if the result is abnormal. Additional testing frequently results in increased costs, danger, or both. A doctor weighs the usefulness of the information a test will provide against the risk.

The range of normal test values is based on the average values found in a healthy population. This means that values fall within this range for 95% of healthy people. However, women and men have slightly different average values, and age may also play a role. These values also vary between laboratories for some tests. As a result, when doctors receive a laboratory test result, the laboratory also provides them with the test's own normal range. Some typical normal results are listed in the table below. However, rather than referring to this table, individuals

should talk to their doctor about the significance of their own test results because values vary by laboratory.

Rubeola's (Measles)

Rubeola, also known as measles, is a type of infectious disease. It is caused by a virus that is transmitted via person-to-person contact as well as airborne spread. Measles symptoms don't appear until 10 to 14 days after exposure. It may also be spread through direct contact with mouth or nasal secretions. Laboratory diagnosis of measles can be done with confirmation of positive measles IgM antibodies or detection of measles virus RNA from throat, nasal or urine specimen by using the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction assay. This method is particularly useful to confirm cases when the IgM antibodies results are inconclusive.

Mumps

Mumps is a contagious disease caused by a virus. It can cause painful swelling in your parotid salivary glands (parotitis). Treatment for mumps focuses on alleviating symptoms. The disease has to run its course. Most symptoms are mild, but serious complications can occur. The MMR vaccine offers protection from the virus that causes mumps. Mumps most commonly affects children between the ages of 2 to 12 who haven’t received the mumps vaccine. However, adolescents and adults can get mumps despite being vaccinated against it. This occurs because there’s waning immunity of the vaccine after several years.

Rubella

Rubella is a contagious disease caused by a virus. Most people who get rubella usually have a mild illness, with symptoms that can include a low-grade fever, sore throat, and a rash that starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body. Rubella, also known as German measles or three-day measles, is an infection caused by the rubella virus. Rubella virus is the pathogenic agent of the disease rubella, transmitted only between humans via the respiratory route.

Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B is a viral infection that causes liver inflammation and damage. Inflammation is swelling that occurs when tissues of the body become injured. Hepatitis B is an infectious disease caused by the Hepatitis B virus (HBV) that affects the liver; it is a type of viral hepatitis. The natural history of chronic hepatitis B infection can be divided into 4 phases: immune‐tolerant phase, immune‐active phase, immune‐control phase, and immune clearance. The condition often clears up on its own. Chronic cases require medication and possibly a liver transplant.

VARICELLA

Chickenpox, also known as varicella, is a highly contagious disease caused by the initial infection with varicella zoster virus (VZV). Varicella zoster virus (VZV) is the causative agent of chickenpox and shingles. The geographic distribution of VZV clades was taken as evidence that VZV migrated out of Africa with human populations. We show that extant VZV strains most likely originated in Europe and not in Africa.
